Brazilian GP. Qualifying Report. Brawn GP's Rubens Barrichello managed to successfully overcome thunder and lightning, multiple crashes and long delays to take a brilliant home pole as his title rivals endured a nightmarish and forgettable afternoon. After long delays between Q2 and Q3, Boobens finally swept home before an elated home crowd to take an emphatic pole and leave his rivals scratching their heads for tomorrow's race.
Q1 and Q2 were dominated by Williams, in particular by lead driver Nico Rosberg who led both sessions in a car setup and evidently well suited to the conditions. Red Bull's Sebastien Vettel was the first big name casuality of the day as he couldn't find any pace in his car to get into Q2 and will now start from 16th tomorrow.
An obviously frustrated Vettel will also be joined further back by outgoing champion Lewis Hamilton who is down in 18th, one position behind his team mate Heikki Kovalainen.
A large crash into Q2 by Vitantonio Liuzzi however brought out the red flags as the conditions were too difficult to drive in and so a 90 minute wait happened before the circuit was deemed safe enough once more.
As proceedings finally got under way again, championship leader Jenson Button suffered the same fate as Vettel in Q1 as he was simply not fast enough, perhaps missing a trick by not electing to switch to intermediate tyres half way through the session like his rivals. He will now start 14th on the grid, alongside the volatile Romain Grosjean.
In Q3 every driver had intermediate tyres bolted to their cars and simply circulated for lap after lap until time on the clock ran out. What then began was a constant trade of fastest laps as the circuit dried somewhat and the fuel loads depleted, with Mark Webber, Adrian Sutil and Boobens trading fastest laps before Boobens eventually won out as the impeccably patient crowd broke out into a shouting chorus of "Rubinho!"
Red Bull will be pleased to have salvaged 2nd in Webber who may be a spoiler for Boobens tomorrow, with Sutil a delighted 3rd in the Force-India after his team mate wrote his car off in Q2's treacherous conditions. Jarno Trulli was an impressive 4th and Kimi Raikkonen rescued some semblance of pride for Ferrari with 5th after Fisichella cemented his now customary last.
Patty's 2nd favourite man Seb Bwemmy was a superb 6th, though our favourite boy Nico will be furious with 7th having dominated Q1 and Q2 with consumate ease. Robert Kubica was an anonymous 8th as Nakas wound up 9th, with Alonso cruising around the back of Q3 to take 10th.
