Glock tops times, then bottoms out

E-mail Print PDF
Bahrain GP. FP3 Report. Timo Glock secured the quickest time in the hour-long Saturday morning practice session over in Bahrain in his Toyota, but then suffered a potentially costly technical problem that stopped his car dead in it's tracks.

Glock hit the front in the closing stages of the session, as tradition dictated that most of the field switched to the softer slick compound tyre and the lap times tumbled. Glock was one of eight drivers to easily undercut the fastest time from yesterday, and his final quickest time was a 1:32.605. It was a slightly short moment of joy for the German though, as his Toyota ground to a halt moments later with a technical issue. He will be hoping that whatever the problem is doesn't blight his qualifying chances too much.

Behind Glock, Felipe Massa grabbed some rare positive headlines for Ferrari by going second quickest, also on the soft tyre, while the practice king of 2009, Nico Rosberg, also popped in a late fast time on the softs to go 3rd, one place ahead of the McLaren of Lewis Hamilton, as the McLarens, Ferraris and BMWs suffered the ignominy of having to concentrate on low fuel simulations for Q1 and Q2. Behind him was the second Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen, and somewhat implausibly, the Renault of Nelson Piquet Jr.

Jarno Trulli failed to match the pace of his session-topping team mate and ended the session in 9th, while plenty of the other favourites for qualifying and the race had circumspect morning runs. The Red Bulls ended the session 11th for Sebastian Vettel and 18th for Mark Webber, while the Brawn GP pairing were down in 15th and 16th for Button and Barrichello respectively.

Sebastien Bourdais also suffered a few mechanical glitches, and he finished bottom of the pile having completed only 7 laps. But at least this time he had an excuse for Buemi beating him.

Qualifying will get underway in an hour or so, where the Brawns and Red Bulls remain the most likely candidates to take the fight to Toyota.
