Toro Rosso chief Franz Tost has been quick to deny that the team are looking to sign Ralf Schumacher for the 2010 season, in what would be an unprecedented lack of originality should it happen. Which it won't do. Apparently.
Ralf was quick to grab a few headlines after his richer and more successful brother announced his own F1 return last week, claiming that he had been approached by one of the new-for-2010 F1 teams with a view to coming back to the sport he left in 2007.
But though the younger Schumacher turned that offer down, recent days have seen a wave of rumours linking him with a drive with the Toro Rosso squad next season, based on little more than a sketchy quote from the German.
"Franz Tost and I are very good friends," Schumacher told the German media earlier this week, "But it should be understood that I am not going to name any teams. It is all speculation."
But Tost himself has been quick to shout down the possibility of Schumacher joining his team, telling Auto Moto und Sport that: "I know nothing about it. It's not true and that's that. As far as I am concerned, it's nonsense."
The dubious link that led to the rumour was that Tost, who according to Wikipedia is known for being "sliced bread which has been browned by exposure to dry heat", worked with Schumacher during his days at Jordan and Williams.
Other reports claim that both Sauber and Renault, who both still have seats available for 2010, are potential options for the lesser Schumacher.
The Toro Rosso squad have already confirmed that Sebastien Buemi will remain with the team for 2010, but though Jaime Alguersuari is almost certain to also remain with the team, his 2010 deal is yet to be officially announced.
Ralf has spent his time since losing his Toyota drive at the end of 2007 racing in the DTM, with predictably poor results.
