New Webber gets Red Bull test

E-mail Print PDF

The new, improved and slightly less attractive Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo has secured a test drive with the Red Bull Racing team in a largely pointless 'young driver' test session next month at Jerez, after winning this year's British F3 title.

Ricciardo will drive a Red Bull-Renault car at the Jerez track in the test session, set to run from December 1st to 3rd. The Australian dominated this season's British Formula Three championship and is one of the several thousand youngsters on the Red Bull driver development programme.

He will race in the World Series by Renault in 2010, which is a bit like the GP2 Series, but crapper.

Ricciardo will be joined by fellow Red Bull young driver Brendon Hartley, the Kiwi driver who was employed by Toro Rosso and Red Bull as a test driver in 2009. Hartley will test a Toro Rosso, and may be joined by another of the 6,569 Red Bull development pack.

STR boss Franz Tost confirmed today that: "We will test Brendon Hartley and we will see if a second driver comes to join us from Red Bull for this test." Which s basically what we just wrote.

Plenty of other teams will be present at the test, which represents a chance for some on-track action over the off-season, with pre-season testing proper not set to get underway until February, With the 'young driver' days not really offering much in the way of purpose, most teams will use it as an opportunity to cycle through all the drivers they promised F1 drives for this season.

Hence Ferrari will test the top finishers from this season's Italian F3 championship, while Williams will give Andy Soucek his test role for winning this year's Formula 2 championship. The Williams team will also use the test as an opportunity to give 2010 race driver Nico Hulkenburg some track time.

BMW Sauber will also be present, for what is likely to be the last F1 track action for the BMW brand, testing Formula BMW champions Alexander Rossi and Esteban Gutierrez.
