Sutil roundly criticised for crash

Force India's Adrian Sutil was hit with a post-race reprimand by the stewards at the Singapore GP after his mid-race clash with Nick Heidfeld, while the irate BMW driver branded his fellow countryman as being "stupid" after the crash.

Sutil followed up his impressive race at Monza with a rubbish piece of driving in Singapore. On lap 20 of yesterday's race, he spun around when attempting to make a pass on Jamie Alguersuari's Toro Rosso, then tried to spin back around and continue, only to collect the BMW Sauber of Heidfeld as he negotiated the corner.

Heidfeld retired pretty much on the spot, while Sutil continued for a further four laps after pitting to repair the damage to his car before he was also forced to call it a day.

After the race, the Singapore stewards decided that Sutil's actions had constituted dangerous driving, and issued an official reprimand, along with a $20,000 fine.

Sutil did apologise to Heidfeld after the race, citing the reason of him simply failing to see the BMW as an excuse for his actions.

"After the start I was stuck behind Jaime and I could not find a way past," Sutil insisted, "In the end I had several opportunities to pass and it was not enough. I saw a gap, tried it again, he closed the door, we touched a bit and spun, then Nick came around the corner and hit my front wing.

"I am sorry for him. I tried to keep the engine running - I didn't see there were cars coming because it was right next to barrier in front of me, cars flying around the corner."

But Heidfeld was in no mood to accept apologies, saying that Sutil's actions had been "completely stupid" and saying that the German should take more care with his spinning in future.

"I think it was quite obvious from the TV," Heidfeld frothed, "I still think it was completely stupid of Sutil, he kept going and went back onto the circuit without looking. I was past him with my front and he accelerated into my car.

"Obviously I thought he would stop. I took a gap and when I saw moving I moved to the left. He should look where he goes."

In reply to what action he felt the BMW team should take against Sutil, he arfingly replied that: "Maybe we try to find a brain for him!"

Heidfeld also lamented that the crash brought to an end his unprecedented run of race finishes. He has racked up 41 consecutive finishes in grands prix since he retired from the United States Grand Prix back in 2007.

"Obviously it is disappointing," he whimpered, "I hope it is a record that will stay for a while. Still disappointing not to finish a race like this."
