Brawn: Rosberg is "close to" race win

Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn says that his driver Nico Rosberg is on the verge of breaking his winless streak in Formula One, after coming close to securing his first race win at the Chinese Grand Prix two weeks ago.

Rosberg is yet to win in Formula One after 74 races, since he made his debut in 2006 for the Williams team, but move to Mercedes over the winter.

And the German driver led the early stages of the Chinese Grand Prix two weeks ago, after deciding to stay out on slick tyres when the rest of the field pitted for intermediates.

But he was eventually passed by Jenson Button's McLaren after making a mistake on lap 19, and finished third, to secure his second podium in a row.

The Mercedes driver currently sits second in the drivers championship after four races.

And Brawn is now convinced that the young German driver is moving in the right direction, and that his first grand prix win is not far away at all, particularly with the improvements that the German team are set to roll out in the coming races.

"We've not had a fantastic start but we are still in there because no-one else is really dominating either," Brawn mumbled to Reuters on Thursday, "There is still plenty of opportunity.

"I was frustrated at the in China because Nico could have won that race. He made one mistake in very difficult circumstances.

"He's very close to winning a race, just needs things to fall into place...but that will come.”

The Mercedes upgrades for Spain will see a longer wheelbase car used to dial out understeer issues in the W01 design, while they are close to implementing their version of the McLaren F-duct device.
