Red Bull Racing driver Mark Webber hinted that his team should start to think about prioritising their two drivers at race weekends, after the Australian moved well clear of team mate Sebastian Vettel in the championship battle.
Webber took second place at the Belgian Grand Prix, recovering well after nearly stalling off the start line, while his team mate Vettel failed to score a single point following a collision with Jenson Button's McLaren and a drive-through penalty.
The result leaves Webber just three points behind Hamilton in the championship race, and drops Vettel some 31 points off the lead.
And although Webber suggested after the race that it was still too early to install a pecking order into the team, he added that such a decision wasn't too far away if the team wanted to challenge Hamilton and McLaren for the title.
"McLaren have won many championships and have a good trophy cabinet, Red Bull have a good trophy cabinet but not as good," Webber explained in the post-race press conference.
"I think it depends on how hungry we are to try and do that."
He added: "I think it is too early at the moment to say that [one driver should be prioritised], but maybe there is a different strategy compared to McLaren.
"It's still too early at the moment but not too far away."
His view was not shared by Lewis Hamilton, who saw his team mate also fail to score in Belgium, with Button falling 35 points off the pace.
"I think today Jenson was very unfortunate," Hamilton shrugged when asked about the chances of McLaren now favouring him over the reigning champion.
"I get the same treatment as Jenson and vice versa and that enables us to both score maximum points, so I don't feel there should be any preferential treatment. The team do their best, the maximum for each of us so no more they could do."
He added that it was still too early to suggest that the 2010 championship was now a two-horse race between himself and Webber, despite seeing the other three championship protagonists failing to score.
"You have seen in the last few races how quickly things can change so we still have a long way to go, and many points to be grabbed by any of us drivers fighting for the championship," Hamilton rambled.
"The closest rival to me at the moment in terms of points is Mark but I still think the championship is open. We want to make sure that is not the case after another few races."
