Former BMW Sauber test driver and F1 race driver Christian Klien has insisted that he is still hopeful of finding some way onto the 2010 Formula One starting grid, despite the available seat numbers dwindling over the last few weeks.
Klien was linked with the second seats at both Sauber and Renault for 2010, but both of those seats went elsewhere, to Pedro de la Rosa and Vitaly Petrov respectively.
The recent announcements have left only two seats still available on the upcoming season's grid, with the second seats at Campos and USF1 still unconfirmed.
Recent rumours have linked Superleague Formula champion Adrian Valles with the USF1 drive, while Campos are still to secure their 2010 budget and are set to make an announcement on their future on Monday.
But Klien, who raced for Jaguar and Red Bull between 2004 and 2006, before running as a test driver for Hond and lately BMW Sauber, says that he will continue to work on a 2010 deal so long as there are still seats available.
"As long as there are cockpits available I will try hard," Klien claimed today, "I came close at Sauber and at Renault. At both teams I was in the running until the day before announcements of de la Rosa and Petrov respectively.
"Over the winter there were changes in the teams' leading personnel and in team structures that were not foreseeable for me and that did not play into my hands."
Klien has also raced sportscars in recent years, but has ruled himself out of a seat for 2010 because this year's Le Mans 24 Hours clashes with the Canadian GP weekend.
