The FIA have confirmed that the Pirelli tyre company will become the new tyre supplier to the Formula One world championship from the start of the 2011 season, after a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council in Geneva today.
The Italian tyre company had been the favourite to take over the tyre supply deal from the Bridgestone company, after the Formula One teams all but confirmed a deal with the company.
But FIA president Jean Todt had thrown the deal into doubt when he suggested that the deal may well go up for a tendering process for 2011.
But despite interest from Michelin, Cooper Avon and Korean company Kumho, the meeting of the WMSC has confirmed that Pirelli will take over the contract.
"Pirelli has been selected as the single tyre supplier for the FIA Formula One World Championship for a period of three years, commencing in 2011," an FIA statement released today grimaced.
"The sole supplier will undertake to strictly respect the sporting and technical regulations implemented by the FIA."
Pirelli last raced in Formula One in 1991, and has won 44 races in total.
