The McLaren team have covered their bases should the FIA deem there to be anything untoward with their primary car design ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, by bringing an alternative set of rear bodywork for their cars to the race.
The McLaren MP4-25's rear bodywork will be inspected by the FIA prior to the start of the weekend at the desert track, after the Red Bull and Ferrari teams requested clarification on the legality of the team's innovative design, which effectively 'stalls' the rear wing to increase straight line speed.
The FIA's Charlie Whiting had been due to assess the design last week after McLaren invited him to their headquarters, but he was delayed from a flight from South America, and had to cancel the trip.
But the McLaren managing director Jonathan Neale denied that their alternative rear end is a sign that they are worried about the inspection, saying that the extra bodywork was a "contingency" only.
"We're not taking a radically different package [to Bahrain] but you just never know what the stewards are going to do on the day," he told reporters on Tuesday.
"We get the best advice we can from the FIA in the interests of transparency. If the stewards decide on a different course of action, though, it's still our duty to go racing.
"So we have a contingency, but I wouldn't put much effort into it and I'm not expecting it to be used."
The team maintain that they have been in contact with the FIA over the development of their design, and they do not expect their setup to be ruled as transgressing the rules.
Meanwhile, the team also confirmed that they would start the season with Gary Paffett as their sole reserve driver, though they are still believed to be looking for another reserve.
Paffett is the sole backup for the team after long-time test driver Pedro de la Rosa moved to a Sauber race seat for 2010, and the Woking team have been linked with a move for former BMW tester Christian Klien, who has been left with just a Peugeot Le Mans reserve role after putting all his eggs in the basket marked "luck into a crap F1 drive".
Paffett tested for McLaren on the opening day of the pre-season Valencia test, and will fill the reserve role for the first four races at least, before his new season in the DTM gets going at the end of April.
"Gary has been on the team since 2006 and we value his dedication and technical feedback," team principal Martin Whitmarsh explained.
"We need someone who's ready to step in if anything should happen to prevent Jenson or Lewis from taking part in a Grand Prix weekend.
"We know from working with Gary, and from watching his performances in other racing categories, that he's ready and able to take on this responsibility."
