Teams told to change diffusers - report

E-mail Print PDF

According to reports tonight, up to three Formula One teams have been told to re-evaluate their double diffuser design for the second round of the championship in Melbourne, after a ruling by the sports governing body.

A report from ESPN suggests that both McLaren and Renault have been told to use a different diffuser design in Australian, after the FIA issued a clarification on the rear diffuser rules.

The report suggests that the FIA ruling prevents teams from adding another layer onto the double diffuser setup "by exploiting the hole where the external engine starter fits".

As the cars have passed the scrutineering process in Bahrain, they will be allowed to race in Sunday's grand prix, but the clarification suggests that the diffuser esign used by some will not be legal as of Melbourne.

A later report from motorsport-total.com suggested that Mercedes were also among the teams that had been caught by the FIA exploiting the loophole.

The situation follows the controversial start to 2009, where Brawn GP, Williams and Toyota debuted their double diffuser designs. They were eventually found legal at a World Motor Sports Council hearing.
