Hispania Racing boss Colin Kolles believes that there are "at least two seconds" more pace to come from the HRT team's Dallara car in 2010, as the rookie squad aims to fight with the other new teams over the next few races.
The Hispania team have had a troubled start to the season, with Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok occupying the back row in both races so far this year, though Chandhok secured the team's first finish of the season in Australian, coming home 4 laps down in 14th.
And although the team is still lagging behind even fellow rookies Virgin Racing and Lotus in terms of outright pace, Kolles is confident that they will be able to make progress towards those teams in the next few races.
"We have no major issues. We are getting closer to the field and if it goes on like this we will be catching up very soon," Kolles confidently bellowed to Autosport.
"I think there are still two seconds in the package. At least two seconds."
Bruno Senna was the fastest of the HRT pair in qualifying down under, but he was still 1.5 seconds off the best rookie qualifier, Heikki Kovalainen in 19th place.
Kolles added that they needed to give their drivers time to adjust to the new HRT car, after coming into the season with no testing. Both Senna and Chandhok are also rookies for 2010.
"This is one of the things, and obviously to get acquainted to a Formula 1 car," Kolles explained in relation to the drivers learning new tracks, "They haven't had experience in Formula 1. Formula 1 is different to any other car. I think the whole package is at least two seconds quicker."
He added that the team's technical chief Geoff Willis was working hard to improve the car's somewhat fragile reliability.
"The objective is to improve the car in all areas. To get the reliability," Kolles insisted.
"There is already development on the reliability side, because the first thing now is to make the car reliable. There is already a steady change of components to sort different issues."
