Newey gets OBE in New Year Honours

World-renowned Red Bull Racing designer Adrian Newey is to be rewarded for his services to motorsport throughout his career with an OBE, after being included in the increasingly outdated New Year Honours list in the UK.

Newey will be made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire after being included on the mildly-pointless honours list published on Saturday.

The honours lists are presented on New Year's Day each year, as well as on the Queen's Birthday, listing British people deigned worthy of being honoured for their work.

The award list confirmed that the designer of multiple championship-winning F1 cars would be rewarded for his services to motorsport.

Newey's most recent titles have come with Red Bull Racing, with Newey having designed both the RB6 and RB7 cars which clinched the titles in the last two seasons with Sebastian Vettel.

Prior to joining Red Bull in 2006, Newey also designed title-winning cars for McLaren and Williams, having originally worked for March.

His RB7 design won 12 of the 19 races in the 2011 season with Vettel and team mate Mark Webber, and also took all but one of the available pole positions.

The team secured the constructors championship for the second season in a row.

Elsewhere on the almost-interesting New Year's honours list, 1992 Formula One world champion Nigel Mansell has been awarded a CBE for his recent charity work.

Mansell will become a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in recognition of his work as the president of charity group UK Youth.

He has previously received an OBE for his contributions to motorsport.
