Vettel remains calm despite exhaust ban

Despite the upcoming ban on off-throttle blown diffusers, championship leader Sebastian Vettel is remaining calm about his long-term title hopes, despite many observers suggesting the ban will affect Red Bull more than most.

The ban, which the FIA has pushed for throughout the 2011 season, will come into effect at the British Grand Prix next month.

The new rules will restrict the new engine mapping software being run by the teams to 10% of their maximum, after teams began to use the software to improve the efficiency of their blown diffusers.

There is no definitive proof as to which teams will be affected the most by the ban, though many reports have claimed that Red Bull run a more efficient system than their rivals.

But Vettel remained sanguine about the situation when asked about it by the German SID news agency over the weekend.

"I don't believe [the ban] will hit us harder than anybody else," he shrugged when asked about Red Bull's situation regarding the ban.

"You can argue about why it is happening in the middle of the season, but in terms of the World Championship there is still a very long way to go."

He added that: "An awful lot can happen very quickly, as we saw last year."

Meanwhile, in a separate interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper, Vettel suggested that he was happy to be considered a "scumbag" on the track, saying that the key to success was being ruthless.

But he added that he did not allow any ruthless driving to spill over after the race.

"I must, of course, on the track be said to be a scumbag, you simply must have the killer instinct," he shrugged, "If you're too friendly, the others will only rush past you.

"But there is no reason that after the race you still have to be an ass."

Vettel has won five of the first seven races in the 2011 season, and now leads the championship by 60 points as the teams head to the European GP in Valencia this weekend.
