HRT penalties add to grid re-shuffle

E-mail Print PDF

HRT drivers Daniel Ricciardo and Narain Karthikeyan added to the list of drivers given grid-drop penalties for the Indian GP, with Ricciardo forced to take a gearbox change and Karthikeyan penalised for blocking.

Ricciardo's team replaced the gearbox after the final practice session after the Australian driver suffered issues with the car during the FP3 session.

The penalty was a cruel blow to Ricciardo, who went on to qualify a career-best 21st, as both HRT machines outqualified their Virgin Racing rivals for the first time ever.

Meanwhile, Karthikeyan was penalised after being adjudged to have blocked the Mercedes driver Michael Schumacher during the Q1 segment of qualifying.

Although Schumacher made it through to Q2 regardless, the stewards handed the home driver a five-place grid drop.

The Australian is the fourth driver to net a grid-drop penalty for the inaugural Indian GP. Renault's Vitaly Petrov, who qualified 11th, will start 16th after a five-place penalty for his crash with Michael Schumacher in Korea.

Meanwhile, both Lewis Hamilton and Sergio Perez picked up three-place penalties for ignoring yellow flags in Friday practice. Hamilton will drop from second to fifth, while Perez drops from 17th to 20th on the grid.

One driver not affected by all of the shuffling will be Virgin's Timo Glock, who is guaranteed to start last on the grid having failed to set a time inside 107% of the fastest time during Q1 when he was hit with a gearbox problem.

Glock will be allowed to start the race, having lapped within the 107% time throughout practice.
