Injured Lotus Renault-aligned Formula One driver Robert Kubica has suffered a broken leg after slipping on ice near his home in Northern Italy, in a further blow to his ongoing hopes of returning to F1 action in the future.
According to reports from the Italian media, which were later corroberated elsewhere, Kubica has suffered a fracture in his leg after falling over when he slipped on ice in the town of Pietrasanta in the north of the country.
The accident occurred near to his home in the town, where he has been undergoing rehabilitation in his attempts to return to the F1 grid in the future.
Reports claim he was taken to the nearby Versilia Hospital, where X-rays confirmed the injuries to his right leg.
Reports have suggested that he is set for a recovery of some three weeks from this latest injury.
Initial reports have suggested that the injury has re-opened the leg fracture he suffered in February, when he suffered life-threatening injuries in a rallying accident.
Kubica has been out of competitive action since suffering serious injuries in the crash on the Ronde di Andora rally last year.
The Polish driver recently confirmed he will not have recovered by the start of the 2012 season, but was hoping to make a driving return later in the year.
His future in the sport has been up for some debate recently, after the newly-renamed Lotus team signed both Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean for the 2012 season.
Some reports have linked Kubica with a switch to the Ferrari team should he have recovered by the start of the 2013 season.
Neither Kubica nor the Lotus Renault GP team have yet officially commented on the Polish driver's condition.
