Kubica discharged after leg-breaking fall

Injured Formula One driver Robert Kubica has returned to his home in Monaco after being discharged from hospital in Italy following further surgery on his injured right leg, which he broke after slipping over on ice last week.

Kubica will now continue his rehabilitation as the Polish driver strives to recover his fitness and return to the F1 grid.

He has been out of action since early February last year, when he suffered severe injuries following a pre-season rallying accident.

In the crash, he injured his right leg, arm and hand, all of which required multiple surgeries to treat.

Kubica's latest injury, caused by him slipping on ice near his temporary home in Viareggio, saw him re-open the leg fracture he suffered in the accident.

The Pole was treated at Mantova Hospital, with doctors re-setting the leg with pins.

He has now been discharged to his Monaco home, but faces at least two weeks more rest before he can continue his recovery.

The new injury is, however, not likely to delay his overall recovery time, which doctors have stated is governed by his recovery time from his wrist injury.

Kubica's planned path back onto the Formula One grid is currently unclear.

His seat at the Lotus Renault GP team has been taken by Kimi Raikkonen for 2012, with the Polish driver unable to guarantee that he would be recovered by the start of the season.

He has been linked with a switch to the Ferrari team for 2013, but wherever he secures a drive, the Pole will require considerable testing to get back up to speed in the sport.
