Sutil assault trial begins in Munich court

Former Force India Formula One driver Adrian Sutil is set to go on trial at a court in Germany over the next two days, over allegations that he assaulted Group Lotus co-owner Eric Lux in a Chinese nightclub last April.

Sutil's trial is set to begin on Monday, with the case set to be heard over two days in the Munich courtroom.

The German has denied deliberately assaulting Lux in the nightclub, despite reports that the businessman ended up needing stitches in a neck wound after being hit by a champagne glass.

Sutil and Lux were in the nightclub to help celebrate Lewis Hamilton's win in the Chinese Grand Prix earlier that day.

Lux is also set to attend the first day of the case, according to reports from Germany.

Hamilton had been set to be called as a witness, but has reportedly told the court that he is unavailable due to sponsor commitments elsewhere.

The prosecution in the case are calling for a one year suspended sentence to be handed to the former Force India driver over the incident.

But Sutil has always maintained his innocence, and his manager Manfred Zimmermann has said that he is confident his driver will be found innocent.

"We are convinced that the court will come to the conclusion that there was no intentional attack," he said earlier this month, "We feel good. So the truth will come out."

According to a report from the rarely-trustworthy Bild newspaper in Germany, the court case will feature security camera footage of the incident.

The footage appears to show Lux approaching Sutil as he sat with Hamilton on a sofa in the club, with a scuffle breaking out shortly after.

Sutil is currently out of work after losing his drive with Force India for 2012, and failing to net a drive with Williams.
