Famous brother of someoneĀ Ralf Schumacher has confirmed that heĀ is interested in driving for the Serbian F1 outfit Stefan GP in 2010, a shocking move that for some baffling reason has the backing of F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.
Stefan GP are expected to begin testing their 2010 car, heavily based on designs bought from the defunct Toyota team, towards the end of February in Portimao, and their main driver is expected to be Kazuki Nakajima.
But Ralf, whose richer and more successful brother has made a shock return to the sport with Mercedes in 2010, is also thought to be in the frame for the seat, and he confirmed that the Stefan team was an option for him for 2010.
"Mr Stefanovic makes a very serious and purposeful impression," Schumacher mused to German rag Bild, "I have learned about their interest in me, but there is not any more to be said at the moment.
"Whether or not it is really an interesting option, remains to be seen."
Earlier this week, Bernie Ecclestone was quoted as saying that Ralf would be the "ideal driver for them" on the subject of Stefan GP.
Meanwhile, Stefan GP's hopes of making the 2010 grid, which rest on a current team, likely to be USF1 or Campos, not making it to Bahrain, continues to be the subject of much speculation.
Spanish gossipmongers Diario AS suggested that the deadline for the Spanish team to pay for their Dallara chassis design is on Friday, and that if this was missed, then the design may well become the property of Stefan GP.
This rumour emerged despite Campos insisting that their agreement with Dallara was still "in place".
"The agreement among Dallara Automobili S.p.a. and Campos Meta 1 F1 Team for the construction and development of the Campos Meta F1 car for 2010 season is in place as agreed when contract was signed back at the beginning of 2009," an official statement from Dallara read.
