GP3 Series - Jerez Test Report

E-mail Print PDF

The second post-season test of the autumn for the GP3 Series saw them head to the Spanish Jerez circuit for another three days of meaningless lappery, with the timesheets being unsurprisingly dominated by the more experienced drivers.

Day 1

The opening day of the test was dominated by the multiply-named Portuguese driver Antonio Felix da Costa, who topped both the morning and the slower afternoon session at the Spanish track for Mark Webber's MW Arden team, da Costa's third different team from his three days of testing so far after earlier runs at Estoril for Carlin and and Addax.

He topped both sessions despite losing a large portion of track time with mechanical problems in the afternoon. Both times, he ended up clear of GP3 newcomer Alexander Sims, the British driver enjoying a positive run for ART after a disappointing season in the F3 Euroseries.

2010 GP3 Series frontrunner Nico Muller ended the day third for Jenzer Motorsport, though the Swiss driver finished down in 17th place in the afternoon, with Jame

Calado (ART) fourth overall, again having set his fastest time in the morning session. His team mate for the day, Dane Michael Christensen, was fifth, though set the third quickest time in the morning.

Albert Costa (Tech 1) was sixth, followed by European F3 Open driver Callum MacLeod (Carlin) and the Romanian Tech 1 driver Doru Sechelariu. Roberto Merhi (ATECH) and Simon Trummer (MW Arden) completed the top ten.

Elsewhere, Eddie Cheever, son of the former F1 and IndyCar driver, had a difficult first day in the GP3 Series, finishing 27th in the morning session and 30th in the afternoon.

Day 2

The second day's overall times were also topped by a MW Arden man, this time Simon Trummer. The Swiss driver ended top of the morning session, and again no drivers really improved their time in the afternoon.

He ended 0.15 seconds clear of Nigel Melker (Mucke) and the consistently quick Nico Muller, who also topped the afternoon session for Jenzer Motorsport. Christensen was fourth overall, second in the afternoon, having returned to one of MW Arden's cars, the team he raced for in 2010.

James Calado was fifth in another strong run for ART, ahead of Sechelariu's Tech 1 car. 2010 Formula Renault UK driver Nick Yelloly was seventh for ATECH, with Day 1 star Alexander Sims taking eighth. Famous French surname Adrien Tambay (Manor) and Formula Abarth driver Zoel Amberg (Jenzer) completed the top ten.

Another famous surname, Carlos Sainz Jr, the son of the former WRC champion, had a nondescript opening day of GP3 action, finishing 13th in the morning and 26th in the afternoon.

Day 3

The final day saw RSC Mucke driver Melker continue his good form, and he topped the overall times for the day with the quickest time in the morning session, despite only posting the 21st fastest time in the afternoon session, which was topped by Christensen, again driving for MW Arden.

Christensen was also second in the morning session to end the day just behind Melker in the overall timesheets, with Spain's Roberto Merhi taking third overall for the Addax team.

Day 3 pacesetter Trummer was fourth overall in the morning and afternoon sessions, with fellow GP3 returnee Nico Muller taking fifth place with another strong day's work.

ART's Calado was sixth overall, with Carlos Sainz Jr putting in a much stronger performance in his second day in a GP3 car, finishing 7th overall for Addax. Carlos Munoz (Mucke) wa eighth, ahead of Alexander Sims , who switched to the Jenzer team for the final day. FRenault UK driver Tamas Pal Kiss completed the top ten for ATECH.

Also impressing were Indonesian driver Rio Haryanto, who was second in the slower afternoon session, Formula BMW Europe champion Robin Frijns, who finished 11th overall and fellow FBMW star Facundo Regalia, who took a top ten finish in the afternoon session.

The three day Jerez test brought the curtain down on the GP3 Series for 2010, with the teams not set to return until early 2011 with their pre-season testing buildup to their second year of action.
